PIGS

Heather is the pig farmer. After many years teaching all levels of students, she left academia to fulfill her dream of owning land and raising environmentally friendly pork. The pigs are crossbred heritage breeds raised on pasture, never confined to farrowing crates or concrete floored pig barns. Born outside year round, they immediately develop healthy immune systems and robust musculature from rooting in dirt and playing with brothers and sisters. They are fed non-GMO, local grains (grown in Union and Wallowa counties) which they supplement with a variety of plants and insects they dig out of the pasture. It may take a little longer to raise them this way but the flavor of the meat makes it worth the wait.

BEEF

Our beef are grass fed and grass finished Angus crosses that are born and raised three miles out of Baker City. This irrigated acreage grows enough grass in the summer to feed our approximately twenty cow/calf pairs and a bull. It also grows excellent alfalfa that feeds them all winter. Due to this feed and farming efficiency, not only is the beef we grow delicious, it has a low carbon footprint and the cattle are never stressed. Butchering is done on the property and completed at a local custom butcher shop, except USDA certified meat which is processed in nearby Elgin, Oregon, thus keeping more of your dollars in eastern Oregon.

CHICKENS

Our chickens spend their lives naturally, foraging through Sara's yard, Dad's alfalfa, and Heather's pastures where they eat insects, scratch in the dirt, and eat fruit and vegetable scraps we throw out for them. The miracle of chickens, similar to pigs, is that they turn all these unwanted insects, weeds, and rotten plant life into healthy eggs with bright yellow yolks. Research has even reported that eggs from pasture raised chickens like ours are higher in well, you'll have to read the article yourself. The link is below. It's a long list of good things for your body and the healthiest life for the hens and roosters. Interested in raising your own eggs? Ask when we'll have hens for sale.

MORGAN (DOG)

Morgan was a Border Collie/German Shepherd mix who was almost 2 years old when he was hit by a vehicle and was unable to recover. He had a sense of humor, loved to herd the pigs, and never found a person he didn't want to lick. His main job was protecting the chickens from coyotes. He is greatly missed.

FRUIT/VEGETABLES

Sara and Katrina grow a garden every year. Heather throws seeds out and waters them usually and sometimes gets actual produce. Lucky for you, Sara and Katrina share their garden bounty of herbs and vegetables when it is in season, at the Farmer's Market. They have apple, pear, and Italian plum trees, as well, that will be available again this fall at the Market. Our produce has imperfections because we never spray it with anything but water. We hope you enjoy our fresh, picked only when ripe plants.

Khaki Campbell ducks

Ducks came along because they were cute! Katrina and Alex brought a few home as ducklings and the flock continues to expand from there. Duck eggs are often edible to people with allergies to chicken eggs, as Katrina found out when she started eating them. Good for baking and all things egg, try duck eggs this week and let us know what you think!
